A Better Way To Conduct RAT Tests for Kids
If you’re a parent who has conducted a home RAT test in your child, you’ll know the struggle associated with administering a COVID test at home. The SureScreen Junior test kit makes testing your 4–12-year-old child easier and less stressful than a nasal swab.
Conventional home RAT tests look like a traditional pregnancy test and are designed to work in a similar way with a ‘lateral flow’ assay which detects a surface marker (an antigen) that tests for the SARS-CoV-2 virus that is responsible for a positive COVID test.
Conversely, the SureScreen Diagnostic Covid-19 Antigen Rapid Test is a cassette style self-test that is designed to detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus quickly and efficiently without an intrusive nasal swab.
How to take a test
Interpretation of results

Positive Result
Two lines appear. One coloured line should be in the control line region (C), and another coloured line should be in the test line region (T) two lines, one next to C and one next to T, even faint lines, shows the test is positive.
A positive result is likely that you are currently infected with COVID-19 and you should self-isolate.
What a positive result means
If you get a positive result, it is likely you are currently infected with COVID-19 and risk infecting others. Contact local state or territory health department regarding confirmatory testing (PCR) and isolation requirements for you and close contacts: Click here
Negative Result
One coloured line appears in the control line (C) region. No line appears in the test line (T) region.
What a negative result means
If you get a negative result, This is not a guarantee that you do not have COVID-19. If clinical symptoms persist or you are in a high risk setting or an occupational risk environment, it is recommended to test again with a new test in 1-3 days
Void (invalid) Result
There is NO line in the control line (C) region.
What a void result means
If you get a void result, This could mean that the test has not run correctly, and it is not possible to say if you had the virus when the test was done. You need to use another test from the pack as soon as possible. Do not reuse anything from the first test and start the test procedure from step 1.
If the problem persist, discontinue the use of these test kits, and contact the Australia Sponsor: (02) 9061 0577 . 9am – 7pm (AEST)
Frequently Asked Questions
RAT tests for kids or junior self-test kits are tests for COVID-19 that provide an expedited result or diagnosis in as little as 10-minutes.
The junior RAT test from SureScreen has been designed with comfort and ease of use in mind. We understand the struggles of trying to administer a RAT test for your 4-12 year old child, which is why the SureScreen Junior RAT test is less invasive than traditional tests.
There are two types of tests that are used to diagnose COVID-19 in Australia:
- Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests
- Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs)
Guidance provided by the Health Direct government website advises that you should take a PCR test if:
- You have symptoms of COVID-19 – a full list can be found here
- You tested positive for a RAT and need a PCR test to confirm your result – you will need to check state or territory legislation to confirm.
- You are a close contact and cannot access a RAT test
The following guidance is provided for when you should take a RAT test:
- You’ve been in contact (not close contact) with someone with tested positive for COVID-19
- You want to check whether you are COVID-19 positive before attending an event such as a festival, gathering, or movie theatre.
- You need to perform a RAT test to attend work or school
The results of the SureScreen Junior RAT test are only considered reliable when the instructions for administering the test are carefully followed.
In some cases, the test may be deemed inadequate if the sampling volume is compromised or contaminated or if the number of extraction buffer drops are less than 3 or more than 4. Limitations of the test are outlined in the information sheet that you receive in the box.
It is recommended to administer the SureScreen Junior test in symptomatic children between the ages of 4-12 who have experienced an acute onset of fever, cough, general weakness/fatigue, headache, myalgia, sore throat, coryza, dyspnoea, nausea/vomiting, diarrhoea, altered mental status.
It is also recommended to conduct a test if children are contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases or probable cases and to at-risk health workers.
